New York City

I took a recent trip to New York City for a Facades+ conference at the beginning of April.  Traveling with fellow architects is always great fun, as we can unabashedly revel in great buildings and spaces (aka geek out) en masse.  A stop on Roosevelt Island to check out progress on the new Cornell University Tech Campus was a pleasure, with buildings under construction by Morphosis, Handel Architects, SOM, and Weiss/Manfredi, masterplan by SOM, and landscape by James Corner Field Operations.  Louis Kahn's Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park was quietly, powerfully spectacular.  He was a master at monumental form and simplicity, which was deployed to full effect here.  The granite stonework was also on point, in terms of finish and texture.  I was also able to squeeze in a visit to the Whitney Museum to check out their Biennial, and peeked into the Guggenheim.  Unfortunately, the Doug Wheeler exhibit at the top of my list, “PSAD Synthetic Desert III,” was temporarily closed for the week.

As always, my time in the city was too short.  Unfortunately, my nicer cameras were stuck in Georgia courtesy of inclement weather and multiple cancelled flights, but my iPhone did an admirable job at my side.  iPhone photos are below.
